Self Sabotage – Recognize it!

We are now 15 days into the new year.  About this time is when people begin to lose momentum towards their goals.

I, for one, have not been very active.  Mostly because I never set a real goal.  For myself a weekly goal for work outs rarely keeps me motivated.  I usually need an external goal to get me going such as a race or competition.    After setting a goal we might find ourselves with little to no motivation to act on meeting our goals.  We then begin to self sabotage.

Here’s some ways we “self sabotage” in meeting our goals and most of the time just recognizing “it” helps overcome our own self sabotage.

There are two types of self sabotage internal and external.

  • Internal is our self talk about our goals. “There’s no way I can do that.”  or “Well I already missed the deadline for xyz, I’ll just not do it.”   An “easy” way to work on this is by re-writing our script and combating our internal dialogue with positive messages.  Here’s another post I wrote on affirmations.
  • External factors that we create revolve around things “out of our control” such as money, time, and access.  “I don’t have money for a gym membership.”  “I don’t have any work out clothes.”  “I am too busy to do xyz.”

The truth of the matter is that we do not need a lot of time, money, or any special equipment to meet our fitness goals.   So then, what to do about this?

Take some time to reflect and analyze the real reason you are not acting on your goals?  Is it because you are happy with the way things are?  Is it because you have some fear about your goal?   Write what you are thinking and discuss it with someone you are comfortable with.

It might be that your goal feels to big or that you no longer have an interest in meeting that goal.  And that is ok.  Set a new goal that feels right to you.

What are some ways you self sabotage? How do you work to overcome these to meet your goals?
